The Wimbledon Season – First Entry for Milos Raonic and Angelique Kerber
Wimbledon Final – 2016 (Men’s Singles) Andy Murray of Britain has reached Wimbledon final by defeating 10th seed Tomas Berdych of Czech in straight sets – 6-3 6-3 6-3 in the semi-final match at SW19.. It is for the third time he has entered into the Wimbledon final. Murray will face sixth seed Milos Raonic of Canada. 29-year-old Murray has made a new record as a British man by reaching 11th major final, by overtaking Fred Perry. Murray, the number one player of Britain had already met 10 Grand Slam finals. He has already made record against Raonic with a 6-3 record in the Queen’s Club final. Sixth seed Milos Raonic defeated Switzerland’s Rogers Federer – the seven-time Champion of Wimbledon, in a five-set, in the semi-final at SW19. Roger Federer has been defeated for the first time in the 11 Wimbledon semi finals he had appeared so far and who had won Grand Slam Champion 17 times. Raonic will be entering his first Grand Slam Final.
Wimbledon Final – 2016 (Women’s Singles)
34-year-old Serena Williams of the United States will be facing 28-year-old fourth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany, in the 2016 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Final match. She is hopeful of winning her seventh SW19 singles title in this match. It is to be noted that Willaims had beaten by Kerber in the Australian Open final. Serena ranks second in the list of players to have won more number of Grand Slams through Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. Thus, she has surpassed Martina Navratilova last year. Serena has missed the chances of winning in the Australian Open as well as the French Open having been defeated by Kerber and Garbine Muguruza in the respective major matches. She is to win her 22nd Grand Slam in this match and if she wins, she will be equalizing Steffi Graf’s record. But she mentions that is not her goal anyways. She admits that she made a number of mistakes in the Australian open and also mentioned that she needs to improve on many things including being fearless while at play. Serena will be playing her 28th Grand Slam in singles final. However, Serena Williams will continue with her position as number one in the world, even she will lose championship in the Wimbledon.
Angelique Kerber had defeated Serena’s sister Venus Williams in the semi-final with a 6-4 6-4. Kerber, though a fearless and confident player, mentions that she expects a tough match as Serena will be focused in beating her as she had lost in the Australian Open against her. She also added that Serena has won on the grass many times. Kerber will be the first German player to win Wimbledon after Steffi Graf, who had won in 1996 and it is Kerber’s first final at Wimbledon, which her second grand slam final.
Wimbledon Doubles Final
The Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) has for the sixth time reached the Wimbledon doubles final together with 7-6 6-4 against Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova. As doubles, they have won for five times the All England Club championship match and they are to play in the final against fifth seeds Yaroslava Shevdova of Kazakhstan and Timea Babos of Hungary to win the major doubles title for the 14th time. The William sisters have won all of their 13 Grand Slam doubles final matches starting with the French Open in the year 1999 till the Wimbledon doubles final in 2012. Serena and William pair has also won gold medal thrice in the Olympic doubles in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
